    Poem Commentary

I WROTE THIS IN 1987 AT BUSH WILDLIFE PRESERVE ST CHARLES MO.
SITTING OUT IN THE WOODS PLAYING MY GUITAR AND SINGING SONGS WITH MY YOUNGER BROTHER. THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE SONGS WE WROTE THAT DAY. A MEMORY I HOLD CLOSE.

    LOOK AWAY

    LOOK AWAY
I KNOW YOU DONT SEE ANY TEARS TODAY
THE RAIN HAS GONE AND WASHED AWAY MY MEMORY
WELL IM ONE IN THE SAME
IM LOOKING FOR A WAY TO WONDER
WILL I EVER BE DANCING IN THE MEADOW
    LOOKING OVER FIELDS I KNOW
IS THIS MY LAST CIGARETTE TODAY
AND WILL I BE HITCHIN ANOTHER RIDE
WHY DO THEY SAY THE SUN JUST NEVER SHINES
WHEN I SEE IT OVER THERE
    IT REMINDS ME OF YOU
IS THIS MY LAST BREATH I'LL TAKE TODAY
OR WILL I BE HITCHIN ANOTHER RIDE
    IM ON THE ROAD AGAIN
IM ON THE ROAD MY FRIEND
IM ON THE ROAD I MUST BEGIN AGAIN
    IM ON THE ROAD
    MY FRIEND

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
