Poem Commentary

This poem was inspired by both the Peanuts special “Why, Charlie Brown, Why” and Helen Steiner Rice’s poem “After The Winter… God Sends The Spring.”

In The Midst Of Spring!

In the midst of spring,

Flowers are starting to grow!

Janice is so glad!

In the midst of spring,

Linus is so full of fun!

Janice likes the swings!

Janice and Linus,

The flowers surround these two!

They are Christmas lights!

When they’re discouraged,

They see their dreams coming true!

Green shades develop!

Janice and Linus,

They see a shy flower thrive!

Its shades are vivid!

This thriving flower,

It presses against the cold,

And it will unfold!

This causes delight!

They were not expecting this!

They sing with songbirds!

There is not a time

When the Lord transmits the gloom,

Lacking merriment!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
