In the City
Lying in bed
thinking about tomorrow.
One day (long ago)
I was a kid in those
streets.
All felt dark and foreboding.
Now home is elsewhere
but I’m from somewhere
everyone wants to go.
What will it be like for them?
Those who grew up far away
safe in their beds?
For whom the city
is always
fresh and new?
Lady Liberty
is bound
to sometimes disappoint.
She’ll be small
in real life
to the tourists.
She was and is
always so huge
to me.
Hollywood does aggrandize
And ironically,
Ironically has the power
to ruin a perfect dream
just by over doing it.
She’s big and green and beautiful
enough
to me.
The quintessential dream idea.
that somewhere stands a mother
open arms
book in hand
torch held high
dreams intact
welcoming
me home
