I Remember Mama

Poem Commentary

To the daughters of my cousin on her passing.

I Remember Mama

I first remember mama,

As she cuddled me in her arms,

When she smiled, when she comforted,

And she held me oh so close.

When she loved me oh so tender,

Through those teary eyes of mine,

And would know whatever bothered,

Even though was not known to mine.

When she rubbed and kissed my boo-boo,

Crying with me too she would,

And would make it all so better,

Even though little boo-boo still hurt.

I remember mama,

When she showed me how to walk,

When she caught me oh so quickly,

When I waddled and would but fall.

I remember mama,

When she read to me at night,

Staying close to me in darkness,

She did fend off the threatening fright.

I remember mama,

For she taught me how to eat,

And she taught me how to dress,

And she taught me how to greet.

So I’ll remember mama,

For she taught me most of all,

How to share it all with others,

This mysterious thing called love.
