Poem Commentary

I saw the picture of this little girl sitting by the sidewalk with people passing by, and it broke my heart. I don't know if that is her mother in the background or not, and perhaps it is, but I could not see myself walking past her and continuing in my life. I don't know if I succeeded in portraying what I felt, but I did try. Perhaps you will understand...

Marcus

Homeless Child

I can see the shame
in her little brown eyes
As she watches others pass
Oblivious in their lives

A gentle night breeze
Brushes her silken hair
She looks like an angel
Illumined in the glare

She hugs herself for warmth
Under Red, White, and Blue
Holding tight to a single toy
Her one friend, loyal, true

She sits in somber silence
As Americans pass her by
Too busy in their circumstance
To heed her silent cry

Gluttons at their tables
They pass without a clue
That yonder sits a little child
That might be hungry, too

Have we become so calloused?
Are we so dull to pain?
That we can pass a child in need,
And not hang our head in shame?

Have we so easily forgotten
The Lord's Parabled Decree...
"Whatsoever ye do to the least
of these, ye do also to me?"

Have we become so heartless,
So selfish in our lives...
That we're no longer moved
By a homeless child's eyes?

/~~~/

I can see the happy flush...
Her brown eyes show no fear...
As I gather her into my arms,
My brown eyes fill with tears...

That is the best love, thru a child. No human could ever feel a greater love... Sad... You should read the love of a child i wrote. There's a few others on my page too.

sing to them, children are so largely over looked and over used for such small creatures, they are the Lord's heritage

The love shines through your writing, America is cuel, I could never pass up a chance to pick up a young child. if only many others felt as you do. you need to publish this in the newspaper for all to read. your friend jodi

wow...I could never walk by a child in need. I would do as you wrote and take the child in my arms as well...many parents don't see the belessing to which our children are..they leave their child to fend for themselves while they go and play..and for you and me both..it breaks our hearts everyday... very well written..it brought a tear to my eye..I have 3 kids myself and wouldn't dream of leaving them or hurting them

You know...many times it's a full belly, and a starving heart. A parent passes by their little Nagy nuisance, while they are always busy with their own existence. Starvation right in the home. Huh. It is something you will never ever forget, if you've experienced it first hand... Thanks for this thought provoking piece.

Very insightful, Lolee. I thank you for taking the time to read this and delve deeper than the surface. Marcus

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
