Ganesha's Child

He came up in the dead of night; he came by random happenstance.

And true to his kin he did not waver, beneath a desert’s glance.

Low and behold, what were those words said from that blind fool?

“Come teachers and students, equal foes and equal allies alike.

Come kings and beggars and long-armed peddler of wares.

Come to me feather and fang, tooth and claw, black and white.

Come all to this, this very night, a time of great homage.

Look here at this!”

The fool sat low to the earth and smiled a face of patience.

And the days came and the days went, but not as cold as seems.

The fool made a chat with buffalo and other things of dreams.

But when they came, the souls he called, come at finally last.

He sat silent and waited until the ticking time had passed.

When finally the silence broke, through stubborn boredom and time.

The fool thrust his finger out far before him, and drew a fathomed line.

They labeled him a fool for staring at this gray beast.

And many left and went away, too fast to say the least.

But those who stayed and listened intent, understood what the fool had meant.

The beast was tied and held fast by a chain, by whomever it had met.

But slowly the poor beast had perished, alone and without.

Its body stood where it was trained to stand, years and years ago.

But the freedom of living just for itself, it would never know.

It was so for years, the titan stood, unable to move a step.

And those souls, who traveled by, dropped their face and wept.

The beauty of this juggernaut was more than words in part.

To love a being undying and never lose your heart.

This beast to this day has lived with us all, a spirit within our chest.

The spirit of never losing hope and giving faith a test.
