For Ulla

An old and tired knowingness
Looking back
At lifetimes of growing
Trying to allow for the frustrations
Of the child within

A need to pretend that I am not
The assurance that I will always be
Loneliness
A desire to understand
Like a mother seeking guidance from her fetus
Not wanting to accept that she already knows

Accepting me
The child
The mother and the fetus
Knowing
That I must go on growing
Forever

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
