Fire Fight
My combat boots are muddy
My uniform is wet
My weapons getting heavy
But I'm not finished yet
I have to do my duty
Regardless of the cost
and if I fail to do it
My life may be lost
I'm out here on the convoy
It finaly rained today
A roadside bomb has just gone off
The battles underway
We all have taken cover
Behind the convoy line
Firing at the enemy
one round at a time
I feel my weapon fire
I see the man go down
With eyes still trained upon me
His body hits the ground
A moments hesitation
Before I fire again
I cant allow myself to feel
anything for him
My heart is made of steel right now
My mind is dark as night
Im not at all the man i was
before this fire fight
I have become something else
My instincts take control
Another hadji hits the ground
for him the bells will toll
Then just like that the fighting stops
The battle has been won
Something clicks inside my head
My duty here is done
The animal inside me
begins to hibernate
Until i call upon him
He'll simply sit and wait
I become myself again
one thought at a time
The walls around my heart come down
Ease sets in my mind
I dont allow myself to think
of what Ive done today
When the time comes I will pay
the dues I have to pay
I ask God for forgiveness
as I empty out my rounds
I take the empty magazine
and throw it on the ground
I jump back in my Humvee
We carry on our way
Most of us wont even think
of what went on today
Until our jobs are over
were laying in our beds
Only then will we allow
the thoughts inside our heads
Some will laugh and some will cry
and some wont feel a thing
cause the price is dear for us to hear
the sound of freedome ring
