Cheap Material
Darling, why do you gasp and sputter?
What’s that look on your face, dismay?
Did you think I would be
Here indefinitely
'til you tire of your frolic and play?
Sometimes I yearn for caresses.
Nothing heavy, just gentle and light.
But do you heed my need
And in softness proceed?
No, you act like we’re having a fight.
I’ve told you I need conversation.
Not gossip or chit-chat, real talk.
But each time I bring it up
You pick up the neighbor’s pup
And say that you’re out for a walk.
‘Twas a long time ago when it happened
When the base of our love did decay
The walls went a-crumbling
Above came a-tumbling;
Cheap material will do that they say.
I warned you the moment I noticed.
I could feel it that day when we kissed.
But instead of discussing,
You resorted to cussing.
Babe, you huffed and you puffed and you hissed
Now there you sit looking astounded,
Bamboozled, astonished, bemused.
You say, ‘Girl, but we’re good.
You’ve misunderstood.'
I can’t help but be slightly amused.
Please don’t think I don’t care; I helped build this
With my blood, with my strength, with my sweat
I feel gutted, embittered
Deceived and bewildered
My soul is a gulf of regret
Huh? What did you say? Reconsider?
Honey, that’s all I’ve done these four years
You see, I am done trying
And I am done crying
I stopped hoping; stopped wasting my tears
Look, I have no clue how to fix this
I’d persevere if I had a doubt
But I’ve crossed the line
I can’t go back in time
I’m so sorry sweetheart, but I’m out
