Poem Commentary

RIP Denis James Sweeney December 2, 2009 Father and grandfather

Another Damn Elegy

I saw you sleeping in that bed
I watched your body slowly fade to bones
You had that skin like leather
The ever-present smell of smoke and booze

The ring on your finger that you promised me
Is buried six feet below me now
As I hold back the tears which never come
The light rain and frigid air contain me

Mourning you was the hardest thing I never did
Our shared name was written on that headstone
Makes me feel so mortal, so fragile
I will never forget this day

The eulogy washed over me
You died long before your body
I hope that you can live a little more through me
As my body begins to fade to bones

Voices come out of dark places, too. And they will insist on being heard. That fact doesn't make their conclusions any less valid. Hard, dark words, denimboy34, and no less valid.

This was a little tough to read for me, because I know the feeling so very well. It certainly tugs on the heartstrings, and it's very well written. Thanks for sharing, I can imagine that it was a tough write.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
