A Pledge of Love
I once held an angel high on a mountain one cold and windy day, but all too soon that lovely angel stole my heart and flew away.
Today I weep from the hole where once my heart belonged; and long for the day that my angel returns with my heart in her hand and her love in a song.
How sad when the love planned by fate is tossed aside by a careless heart, without a thought of what it meant or how it tore this lover’s world apart.
If while walking down the lane or through the woods you like so much, you come upon a broken heart that is warm to your touch.
Look closely, for it is mine, the one you throw aside, the one you had no feelings for, the one that finally died.
Dead only to the sounds of this world, dead to the only one I care to hold, dead for a time but not forever, for surely my pledge of love will warm that heart that seems so cold.
How deep would my feelings be if I ran when first you tossed me aside, or stilled my love like a broken suitor with wounded pride?
Measure the distance to the farthest star and the width of eternity, that’s how deep my feelings are, and how strong my love for thee.
Should you trash my heart or close your ears to silence what should be, if it took forever, that’s how long I would wait, to win your love for me.
If love could win your heart and make my dreams come true, I’d pledge my love from the highest mountain to spend a lifetime walking hand in hand with you.
Today I weep from the hole where once my heart belonged; and long for the day that my angel returns with my heart in her hand and her love in a song.
How sad when the love planned by fate is tossed aside by a careless heart, without a thought of what it meant or how it tore this lover’s world apart.
