A Chat

Don't run!
Come back...

Now,
Stay with me -
Let's have a chat.

You're frightened,
I know.
Hold my hand -
We'll make it together.

What?
You're afraid of me?
I don't bite.
I promise
You don't believe me?
Am I monster?
Will I crush you in my iron grip?
or
Chase you up a tree...
Leave you there?
Maybe
I'll have you for dinner...
And throw away the left-overs.

You're crying!
Oh, stop please!
Trust me...

We may meet some monsters...
But
I'm not one.
Don't run!

If we stick together -
At least for awhile,
We'll learn some tricks
To use
If...
We have to fight alone.
O.K.?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
